Doctor Byam was so excited to step into the shelter for the first time!

Nearly 6 years ago, on October 23rd, 2013, Dr. Kelly Byam was honored, along with other members of Laguna Sunrise Rotary Club with an award for service club of the year. The award was presented at a City Council meeting, and at the end of that meeting, Dr. Byam got up during the public comment period to plea for an ambitious goal; to build Elk Grove’s first Animal Shelter.

It seemed outrageous at the time, and it took a lot of changing of hearts and minds, but many others in the community latched onto the idea and helped propel it forward. After numerous public meetings and a needs assessment (and an election) on June 14th, 2017, three of the no votes on the City Council turned to yes’, we had a unanimous vote in favor, and our shelter was in the works.

The city opted to convert our existing corporation yard, and a little more than 2 years later, our shelter was opened for business! They have a state of the art, expandable facility built for today’s needs, as well as future needs. Now that the dream of building our own Animal Shelter has become a reality, we at Abel Pet Clinic intend to help keep this dream alive, and will be a partner in getting homeless and lost pets back into homes.
