Symptoms That May Warrant An Emergency Vet Visit:

Difficulty breathing or a progressive cough can be an indicator of disease, heart failure, or fluid in lungs.

Weakness and lethargy, especially sudden onset may be a sign of cardiovascular disease, shock, or neurological distress. Abel Pet Care can provide oxygen therapy, IV medication, and drain fluid from the chest when necessary.

Seizure activity may present as mild tremors or generalized motor seizures that can include loss of consciousness, contraction, and extension of muscles, or uncontrolled bladder/stool emptying. Seizures can be caused by many things, including:

  • head trauma
  • toxicity
  • epilepsy
  • growths in the brain
  • and infection

It is important that you call a vet right away if your pet starts having seizures. Inpatient care may be required to treat seizures.

Severe vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration and weakness which must be addressed right away. Testing can determine the cause of vomiting and diarrhea, including liver disease, kidney failure, infection, and more. Your pet may require treatment for dehydration after a spell of severe vomiting or diarrhea, so it is best to bring them in.

Difficult Urination can be a sign of urinary tract infections, stones, and tumors. Obstructed urinary tracts which affects the ability to fully empty the bladder, can be a fatal situation. This is most often seen in male cats and dogs.

Trauma – we treat trauma wounds from vehicular accidents, bites, and other common traumas. Any wound that punctures the skin, particularly a bite wound, should be seen by a veterinarian. Trauma is often below the surface of the skin, hiding internal injuries. We can detect these injuries and provide fluids, pain relief, and treatment as needed.

Difficult Birthing – if an expectant mom is having a difficult or dangerous birth, she may need medical intervention to keep her and the litter safe.

Ingestion of toxic or foreign objects warrants an immediate call to your veterinarian. Certain food items can cause illness in pets, and we are able to safely induce vomiting and provide antidotes to toxins. Foreign object obstruction may require an emergency surgery. At times, this can only be determined using diagnostic imaging.

You know your pets best and know how they normally behave. If you notice a stark change in their behavior and/or unusual symptoms, please don’t hesitate to call Abel Pet Clinic at 916-684-6854.
